If it’s chauvinism that women footballers get paid less for playing at the World Cup...
Is it discrimination that I don’t get paid to play even though I’m shit?

Women's World Cup: Fifa 'entrenched in chauvinism' over prize money, says Hope Solo

I'm gonna go out busking outside Wetherspoons with my ukulele then go to the papers demanding I get paid the same as Beyonce.

Unfortunately, along with chauvinism, there's also bribery, corruption, discrimination, racism, and general all-round sneakiness also firmly entrenched in FIFA.

To be fair, she IS right. That's a gigantic discrepancy. It's not like having equal prize-money would even make a dent in the FIFA coffers, both disclosed and undisclosed.

Agree Mens money should be cut.

Didn't realise Beyonce played the ukulele?

The point is WHY is there such a discrepancy?

Is it because of sexism, or is it because one form of the game earns limitless fortunes through sponsorship and the other one earns £50 a year?

Why would they give £300m (or whatever it is) to competitors who don't generate anything like that much? It's the same reason the men don't get £3bn.

It’s market forces.

Why would I as a sponsor pay the same amount of money to sponsor women’s football when the viewing and attendance figures are minuscule compared to men’s football?

The day women’s football gets regular attendances of 40,000 plus for a top flight game will be the day to start complaining.

And those 40,000 have had to pay for tickets not freebies.

You have to crawl before you can walk.
Women’s football is getting bigger and I believe the league in England has now got its first independent distinct sponsor separate from the men’s game ... Boots I think.
But talk of equal money is nonsense

It’s like saying why don’t League 2 players get the same salaries as Premier league players.
They do the same job and play the same game after all.

If we assume the figures from this page are correct:

https://www.marketplace.org/2018/07/13/fifa-world-cup-by-the-numbers/

It would appear that the Mens WC had 5 x the viewers that the Womens WC did world-wide.

Yet the prizemoney was 13 x the Womens.

Got the gate takings for each competition there?

Re: If it’s chauvinism that women footballers get paid less for playing at the World Cup...
Not sure. You can probably Google it yourself Sven.

With the amount of ticket scams going on in the men's game, and the (apparent) number of freebies in the women's game, who knows how it would work out.

I understand a season ticket to watch West Ham women was around £25 last season.
The game is progressing mostly with the financial support of men’s teams.
That process should continue and the game will grow and women will be able to make a career out of it.
But the Women’s World Cup isnt anywhere near equivalent of the men’s and never will be.

But AFL is an absolute shithouse sport compared to rugby or rugby league, but there's an incredible amount of money in it and drongos from Melbourne and Perth absolutely love it.

You are such a hero, Jonah.

What a fantastic guy you are. An absolute trailblazer for decency and fighting for those less privileged.

If only the rest of the male world was more like you.

Not quite sure what your point is but AFL generates tv, sponsorship & ticket income so the players make a decent income.
Ironically they also have developed a women’s competition associated with some of the men’s teams.
Its financed by income from the men’s game and the players (like the women players at West Ham) get a wage which is in no way covered by the income they generate.
That may get bigger in the future if they can attract sponsors and convince people to pay to watch them.
Simples

The difference is TV rights and sponsorship the mans game more popular deal with it loves

Oh, that wasn't really related to the women's prize money. Just a comment on AFL really.

Literally 2 cities in the entire world like it.

Re: If it’s chauvinism that women footballers get paid less for playing at the World Cup...
I think the mens game has had a bit longer to develop than has had the women's game. When their respective histories are more aligned then maybe the salaries should match.

One critical point is that I would never consider (paying) to go and watch woman's football - I would have to stop doing something I know I enjoy doing already to attend something I MIGHT enjoy doing - shit, I only go to football games close to where I'm working for the social event and only once in the last 25 years has the game actually held my attention for more than 10 minutes.

I don't HAVE to find woman's football exciting or give it any of my time just because I find men's football exciting, for the same reason I don't have to like or give any of my time to the music rap or hip-hop artists put out just because I like the music that prog rock artists put out.

So you’ve given up on your idea that park footballers should be paid the same as elite athletes?

I’m really not interested in your opinion on AFL Jonah just for future reference.

Re: If it’s chauvinism that women footballers get paid less for playing at the World Cup...
The USA women’s team get bigger crowds and generate more money than their Men’s team. Yet the men get 60-70% more per game and that is after a pay rise for the women in 2017. You can’t expect equal pay at club level where women’s clubs would be immediately bankrupt. FiFA can afford to close the gap a bit in prize money. The TV audience pro-rata as mentioned below would give them more, plus every major championship will get bigger as women’s football still in its infancy.

The FA banned women’s football for 50 years. They do now invest shit loads into girls football but some lawyer out there may demand 50 years of compensation for discrimination.
